AW Anaesthesia Services (Albert Walker, CEO)

AW Anaesthesia Services has been in business since 2012 and provides specialist anaesthetic equipment to the laboratory and veterinary industry. We design and manufacture equipment in the UK to meet the requirements of our customers and provide an excellent service post installation.

Our machines require the use of flowmeters namely; Oxygen, Nitrous Oxide, Carbon Dioxide and Nitrogen, and occasionally mixtures of these gases. Initially we imported flowmeters from Europe and the USA, but we discovered that the build quality was not to our satisfaction and there were reliability issues.

One of our customers had a need to combine certain gases at specific flow rates. Prior to our request for a bespoke design, we had bought three individual 1200BV anaesthetic flowmeters and connected them together. However, this was time consuming and tedious, and we asked MPB Industries if they could help. Fortunately, they could help and designed one anaesthetic flowmeter incorporating three calibrated tubes to create a more aesthetically pleasing and easier to operate flowmeter to carry out this function.

MPB Industries were able to meet all our requirements in terms of build quality, reliability, and price. They have an excellent sales and technical support team and are very efficient at getting the products out on time.

Principle of Operation

• The height attained by the float in its tapered flow tube is directly related to a calibrated scale. The flow rate should be read from the top of the plumb bob float, reducing parallax errors

General Installation

• The practical installation of flow tubes is the responsibility of the anaesthetic machine manufacturer and user
• It is, however, imperative that suitable measures are taken to install the flow tubes in a stable and vertical position with minimum flow path disruption, or back pressure

Calibration

• All flow tubes are series calibrated via UKAS traceable master meters at all major figured scale positions to confirm correct readings at 1013 mbar abs 20oC
• Normal standard accuracy is Class 2.5 VDI/VDE 3513, a classification system for variable area flowmeters

Electrostatic Discharge

• All flowmeters have an anti-static permanent conductive coating applied to both the inside and outside walls of the glass to facilitate earthing. This allows any potential static to be dispersed and subsequently earthed via the anaesthesia trolley
• Whilst MPB is more than happy to assist, final earthing arrangements are considered and dictated by the anaesthesia equipment manufacturer

Series CP110 Calibration Cylinder

These instruments are particularly suited to offshore and onshore petrochemical installations and where calibration is required for precision pump metering. This product range can be supplied with either threaded, or flanged connections to suit site requirements.

The CP110 Calibration Cylinder is ideal for use as a pump setting gauge, or pump rate checking and can be scaled from either the top, or the bottom of the cylinder and dual scaled if required (L/min, L/hr, etc).

Series CP100 Calibration Cylinder

This range of precision calibration cylinders has been designed to meet the requirements of high accuracy and robust construction and is particularly suited to offshore and onshore petrochemical installations.

This product range can be supplied with either threaded or flanged connections to customer requirements. The MPB Series CP100 Calibration Cylinder is ideal for use as a pump setting gauge, or pump rate checking.

Series CP130S Calibration Cylinder

This range of precision Stainless steel calibration cylinders have been designed to meet the requirements of high accuracy and robust construction where metering large capacity outputs is essential. This product range can be supplied with either flanged, or threaded connections and secure welded mounting brackets.

Ideal for use as a pump setting gauge, or pump flow rate monitoring. Materials of construction are 316 Stainless steel in conjunction with a borosilicate glass (or polycarbonate) fully protected sight glass.

As alluded to, MPB Industries enjoyed enormous commercial success during the COVID-19 pandemic and was able to play a pivotal role in addressing the UK ventilator challenge (as a supplier of anaesthetic flowmeters). During the period, the organisation was forced to overcome both the operational complications of the pandemic (regarding workplace health and safety) and meet surging client demands at such a trying time. Indeed, the period allowed MPB Industries to truly demonstrate its capabilities and simultaneously enjoy an incredibly busy pipeline. While the demand for anaesthetic flowmeters has perhaps slowed down since then, the company is immeasurably proud of its performance during this period of peak demand and came out of the pandemic on incredibly strong footing to grow the company in new directions.

“It was a challenging time in that we were keen to help fit out the hospitals with more ventilators to help save lives but we also had a duty of care to our staff,” commented Jason. “It did feel incredible to be part of something on this scale and to do our bit during the pandemic.”

Concerning the future, MPB Industries has ambitions to develop global operations and improve its export portfolio via the development of a more robust distributor network, as Jason added: “It’s never a dull day in our industry, one minute we are working with huge water treatment companies and the next supplying process control instruments to the Hadron Collider. However as we make so much in-house we can also do one offs for very small companies and that will long continue.”

At the same time, the organisation will be evolving and adapting its market focus points in line with global market demands to best serve the needs of the industry; in particular, this will involve a slight shift in focus from supplying the human anaesthesia segment of the market (which enjoyed a notable spike during the COVID-19 pandemic) towards that of the veterinary market, where the company excitedly reports enormous opportunities.

Commenting further, Jason shared: “We’re looking for good quality distributors on a worldwide basis. We currently export pretty much 50% of our product anyway, but we see much more opportunity around the world now. The internet certainly helps us to find people and for them to find us, but we’d like to expand that distributor base further because it helps a lot with language barriers, when we have that local base.”
