We are lucky enough to live in a country where we think nothing of turning on a tap and being able to safely drink the water, this is not the case for 26% of the world's population.

We are lucky enough to live in a country where we think nothing of turning on a tap and being able to safely drink the water. This is not the case for 26% of the world’s population, or 2 billion people, who lack safe drinking water according to the 2023 U.N. World Water Development Report.

The average Brit uses a whopping 142 litres of water per day, so ensuring that water is fit for purpose is a huge responsibility. Astonishingly less than 1% of the world’s water is suitable for human consumption. The water that is available for human use is found in lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and shallow underground sources. This water is regularly renewed by rain and is therefore available on a sustainable basis.

However, the journey water takes to reach our taps is far from simple. Before it emerges from our taps, clean and ready for consumption, it has traversed an immense network of pipes, filtration plants, and storage facilities, undergoing an extensive purification process to remove impurities and contaminants. This complex infrastructure, built over decades of technological innovation, allows us to harness and distribute this vital natural resource, drawing from lakes, rivers, and underground aquifers to deliver a constant flow of clean, potable water directly to our homes, businesses, and communities.

Unsurprisingly it all starts with rain.

Rain falls into rivers which water companies then siphon off into reservoirs. The less it rains the less water comes into reservoirs and the more of a precious resource water becomes, hence the familiar hose pipe bans that can come into play in the summer months when rainfall is traditionally lower. Once water is collected it is then screened to remove large objects such as leaves and twigs which would clog up further treatment. Water is then filtered to remove any remaining particles. The last process is disinfection where chlorine is used to ensure the water is pristine, safe and fit for a wide variety of everyday uses. These intricate chemical and physical processes work to meticulously cleanse the water, removing even the most minuscule suspended solids and dissolved impurities that could pose risks to public health.

Our extensive range of MPB VA flowmeters and flow alarms can aid all these processes by ensuring to maintain the integrity of the pre & post treatment lines for potable water. As well as help monitor wastewater lines. MPB VA flowmeters give a permanent visual reading to give the operator peace of mind that any of the process are operating correctly. The visual display can be backed up by the addition of a fail-safe flow alarm or a 4 -20 ma ( 10 – 100% of scale reading ) flow signal.

MPB also offer a range of Calibration Cylinders and Sight glasses to help ensure accurate dosing of the chemical pumps.

The Importance of Regular Maintenance for Water Treatment Systems

The various components that make up a water treatment system, from the filtration equipment to the chemical dosing mechanisms, require diligent upkeep to continue functioning optimally. A critical aspect of this proactive maintenance is ensuring that essential water treatment additives like chlorine, dechlorinating agents, and pH adjusters are being accurately dosed in every cycle. Facilities rely on precision flow meters to carefully measure the introduction of these corrosive chemicals and compensate for pressure changes caused by fluctuating chemical tank levels. Here at MPB Industries we produce an extensive range of flowmeters suitable for dosing dry Chlorine, Sulphur Dioxide and Ammonia gases as well as flow alarms to alert engineers to potential problems. So, to ensure your water treatment flows smoothly reach out to us and see how we can help.

And just before things get too dry (dosing… inside engineering joke. Ahem) then here’s a joke.

Q: What runs, but never walks?
A: Water!

The magnificent MPB Series FA50 Flow Alarm offers a flowmeter and adjustable flow alarm system within the same unit.

MPB Industries is proud to introduce its brand new low-flow anaesthesia tubes for their 1600 Series Range of Flowmeters.

Revolutionising the veterinary anaesthesia industry

MPB Industries is proud to introduce its brand new low-flow anaesthesia tubes for their 1600 Series Range of Flowmeters. These new fully calibrated tubes have extended low-flow ranges from 0.1-1 L/min and with the greater resolution, It will be much easier to establish a more accurate oxygen flow rate.

Why is this an exciting development for the industry?

There are significant advantages to low-flow anaesthesia. Firstly low-flow anaesthesia can reduce the risk of anaesthetic hypothermia by more accurately maintaining the temperature and humidity in the patient’s airway. There is also a cost reduction for this type of anaesthesia; by utilizing low-flow anaesthesia the practitioner decreases the quantity of anaesthetic agents needed. Lastly, environmental pollution is reduced. By minimising the use of volatile anaesthetic agents released into the atmosphere the carbon footprint of hospitals is reduced.

Low-flow rates are particularly beneficial for smaller patients where high fresh gas flow rates typically exceed their metabolic requirements. For these patients low-flow anaesthesia can be a superior and more efficient alternative.

MPB SERIES 1600 SINGLE AND DUAL TUBE VETERINARY GAS FLOWMETERS FEATURES

All MPB flowmeters for anaesthetic gases conform to ISO 5358 / BS 4272 being electrically conductive.

MPB can also supply complete tube and float assemblies independently.

Accuracy of measurement is to class 2.5 VDI/VDE 3513 or better.

Process connections: Alochromed Aluminium, ¼” BSPPF, or ISO 23mm taper outlet. (Please state when ordering)

Our MPB design team will be pleased to discuss existing or new products, i.e. customised designs, scales, tube lengths, etc.

Flowmeters are invaluable pieces of equipment for the safe and efficient handling, transfer, and storage of fluids across various applications.

This article sets out to identify the many possible pitfalls when using variable area flowmeters.

When working smoothly flowmeters are invaluable pieces of equipment for the safe and efficient handling, transfer, and storage of fluids across various applications, including water treatment, oil and gas production, precision manufacturing, and healthcare. However, when these sensors fail or produce inaccurate or inconsistent readings—whether immediately upon installation or over time—it can significantly affect productivity, product quality, and safety.

In this article, we will examine common flow meter performance issues and their probable causes. Additionally, we will explore how improved selection, installation, and maintenance practices, along with a partnership with a trustworthy equipment supplier, can help prevent these problems and facilitate better management when they do occur.

Trouble on the Line: 6 Common Flow Meter Challenges

For fluid handling and transfer to be effective, flow meter readings must be accurate, instantaneous, and consistently repeatable. The following are the most frequent reasons for flow meter failure or inaccuracies.

Installation

For applications where the flowmeter is venting to atmosphere the flowmeter should be mounted with the valve at the inlet side of the flow tube and the scale should read from bottom to top. With the valve placed at the inlet it will prevent any small fluctuations in inlet pressure from effecting the readings.

For vacuum applications and if using a valve, the control valve should be placed on the top side of the flowmeter, and you can do this by flipping the tube, so it still increases from bottom to top. Having the setup this way, the valve acts to isolate the effect the vacuum pump has on the readings.

For applications where there will be varying outlet pressures, the valve should still be mounted on top with the scale still increasing from bottom to top. This set up is commonly used when dispensing gas from a cylinder at a fixed pressure where the outlet pressure may change.

Avoid obstructions

Avoid restrictive bore on pipework, right angles or kinks which can cause instability in the float.

Make sure that the supply of gas or liquid being metered is clean, consistent and filtered if required. We provide a filter mesh in some meters for precisely this purpose.

Consider MPB’s calibration service if your meters require compliance to various standards or you just want to be assured of ongoing accuracy.

I am sure there are many more hints and tips that we could add that would be useful to customers old and new.

Ensure meters are mounted perpendicularly to the wall or panel, or have one of our mounting bases fitted if required.
